Before you buy

Check you're ready

You'll need a Windows or Mac computer that runs Ableton Live 12, headphones, your phone and 20 minutes a few nights a week.

Coming soon

Yuanyue's welcome video is on its way

Hi, I'm Yuanyue.

If you've got twenty minutes after the house goes quiet, and a song in your head you've never finished, this course is for you.

Must have

1Is your computer a Windows PC or a Mac (not a tablet or Chromebook)?
2Is it running Windows 10 or 11 (version 22H2 or later), or macOS 11.7.10 Big Sur or later?
3Does it have at least 8 GB of memory (RAM)?
4Is the processor recent enough?

Windows: an Intel Core i5 (5th generation or newer) or an AMD Ryzen. Mac: any Apple silicon (M1 or newer) or an Intel Core i5.

5Do you have at least 20 GB free on your main drive?
6Can you install software on this computer?
7Do you have headphones? Wired is best.
8Do you have an internet connection?
9Do you have Ableton Live 12, or are you happy to start the free 30-day trial?
10Does your phone record sound, and can you move a file from it to your computer?
11Can you find 20 minutes, a few nights a week?

Nice to have (can wait)

  • A mouse with a right-click and a scroll wheel. Live uses right-click menus a lot; a trackpad works, a mouse is quicker.
  • A small MIDI keyboard. Lovely, not needed: you can draw notes with the mouse or play them on your computer keyboard.
  • An audio interface and a microphone. Only if you want to record with a proper mic. Your phone does the job in this course.
  • Studio headphones. Upgrade later, once you know what you like.

You don't need

A studio, speakers, music theory, or paid plugins. The plugins the course adds are free.

Ableton's requirements checked 2026-10-14. Ableton updates them; see their page.
